MARILYN LAMMERT, BETHESDA THERAPIST: QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THERAPY

I've never done this before, what is psychotherapy and how does it work?

First we'll talk a little on the phone or by email me about what you're looking for—what difficulties you need help with, and whether I'm a good fit for you.  You'll be getting a sense of who I am, asking whatever questions you have, and deciding whether I seem like someone you would be comfortable working with. If either of us feels that the fit doesn't seem right, I'll help you find someone else. Your future well-being is important to me.

When we meet, you will tell your story as both you and I will listen and talk, and find solutions in a safe and healing environment.

I'm active—I ask thought-provoking questions and offer new perspectives, using  cognitive-behavioral approaches, problem-solving and other insight and experiential approaches. I try to explore all elements that underlie behavior—emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual.

Does psychotherapy work and will it work for me?

Most people feel they benefit greatly from psychotherapy, even sometimes after a very short period. The strength of the connection between you and whatever therapist you choose is a big factor in how effective the therapy is. Each person is unique so it's difficult to say especially at the beginning what your experience will be. Generally speaking, if you're motivated and the goals you set for yourself are realistic, psychotherapy is likely going to be very beneficial.

And, it may not work for everyone–like many other things in life, people and situations differ. At bottom, you have to decide for yourself whether therapy is helpful for you.  An added note:  many people find that the process of therapy itself can be as beneficial as reaching specific goals.

What does it cost and do you take insurance? And what if I have insurance you don't take?

I have a standard fee which is moderate and within the average range for the type of therapy and coaching I offer. I also take into account your ability to pay. When we talk on the phone, we can discuss this.

At this time, I participate directly only with Medicare. However, as a licensed clinical social worker, my professional services qualify for insurance reimbursement, and are likely to be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan.  Since with the exception of Medicare, I am an "out-of-network provider;" I collect fees directly from you. I'll give you a receipt for each session which you can submit to your insurance company so that you can utilize your PPO insurance plan's out-of-network benefits or flexible spending account funds.  I work outside of managed care for logistical and confidentiality reasons.

How often will I need to come and for how long?

Most psychotherapy takes place once a week or once every other week.  How long you come depends on various things, which you and I will talk about more fully at the end of the three-session period of assessment and getting to know each other.  Sometimes that three session period is all that's needed.  Other times a brief course is called for—three months or so.  Sometimes a longer time is necessary.  People often will come for a few months and then stop, with the understanding that they can return on an "as needed" basis. You're likely to experience the benefits of therapy for a long time after you've stopped coming.
